A signage system balancing heritage sensitivity with modern wayfinding principles.

As part of the revitalisation of the former Melbourne GPO retail complex, a bespoke wayfinding strategy and signage system was developed with careful consideration of the site’s unique heritage value. Branding and decorative graphics were designed to respect and celebrate the building’s iconic architecture, ensuring that all interventions sensitively maintained open views and sightlines.
Central to the approach were “postal” red cloth banners, their open weave allowing the façade’s detail to show through, which visibly branded the exterior without concealing its historic fabric. This signature red guided visitors inside, weaving through the ground floor, postal hall, and upper levels to define clear pathways and support intuitive navigation. Within the grand postal hall, a striking pendant sculpture suspended overhead integrated retailer names as both a focal point and an information hub. Oversize lettering and sculptural information elements used the scale and volume of interior spaces, further enhancing legibility and wayfinding throughout the building.
